Backyard Garden, Brooklyn Heights
The older couple missed their walks through the Berkshire woods, so we gave their brownstone backyard
the feel of a woodland, by adopting the natural forest pattern of layered trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants,
and allowing the plants to take their own forms in reaching for light.

The strong horizontal lines of the fence give the garden a gentle enclosure while narrow paths of stepping stones, brick, and duff meander through.
Ferns and other low plants placed among scattered rocks, and a simulated old stone wall, add to the New England character.
